About the NDRP
Q: What is the National Disability Research Partnership (NDRP)?
A: The National Disability Research Partnership (NDRP) funds research projects led by and with people with disability.
Our purpose is to support collaborative and inclusive disability research that builds evidence for policy and practice and advances the rights of people with disability in Australia.
Q: What does 'led by and with' mean?
A: Projects led by and with people with disability have people with disability directly involved in leadership, decision-making, and doing the research.
This means people with disability are involved in all parts of the project. This includes planning, governance and delivering the work. They also help to decide what happens next. Their perspectives, experiences and priorities shape the direction of the work and its outcomes.
Research must be done with people with disability, not for or to them.
Q: What principles guide the NDRP’s work?
Our work is guided by the NDRP Principles, which are to:
- Advance high quality research that informs disability policy and practice in Australia,
- Value the knowledge of people with disability in research,
- Strengthen disability research capacity, and
- Share research findings widely in useful and accessible ways.

Q3: What kind of research does the NDRP fund?
A: We fund research that addresses real issues facing people with disability in Australia, including safety, employment, education, health, housing and justice.
Some of our most recently funded projects have explored safety of people with disability across different areas of life. This includes:
- Safe meals,
- Mobility
- Cultural safety in services,
- Sexual and reproductive safety
- Safe alternatives to group homes,
- Violence prevention and safety in prisons, aged care and healthcare settings.
All research we fund is collaborative, bringing together people with disability, organisations and researchers.
The research creates evidence that can improve disability policy and practice in Australia.
Q: Is the NDRP part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?
A: No. The NDRP is not part of the NDIS.
The NDRP and the NDIS have different roles and are separate organisations:
- The NDRP supports research led by and with people with disability to inform policy and practice.
- The NDIS provides funding support packages to eligible people with disability to help them achieve their personal goals and independence.
Q: Where does the NDRP get funding from?
A: The NDRP is an independent not-for-profit organisation.
We receive funding from the Australian Government as part of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031, along with other sources, to support research led by and with people with disability.
Q: Does the NDRP work with the government?
A: While the NDRP receives funding from the Australian Government, we operate independently and are not part of government.
Q: What is the NDRP Research Agenda and how was it developed?
A: The research funded by the NDRP is guided by the NDRP Research Agenda.
The Agenda outlines priority areas for disability research and themes that run through all the work we fund.
